Iran’s doc ‘Captain Daryaee’ heads to Armenia

The 2021 edition of the Apricot Tree Ujan International Documentary Film Festival in Armenia has been hosting Iranian documentary ‘Captain Daryaee’.

Produced and directed by Maziar Moshtaq-Gohari, ‘Captain Daryaee’ tells the story of a traditional Baluch fisherman, who goes on long-distance ocean voyages to catch tunas.

He intends to sail again, but before returning from one of his long journeys, a legal issue regarding his marriage blocks his way. 

The captain finds a way to take more time from the judge to collect money and alongside 18 other sailors, most of whom are underage, leaves the Konarak shore to the Indian Ocean and beyond.

There and on the way, he and his fellow sailors face numerous threats such as pirates and gunships that search for illegal weapons.

The 2021 edition of the Apricot Tree Ujan International Documentary Film Festival is held on August 22-29.

The goal of the festival is to acquaint audiences with the customs and traditions, arts and crafts of big and small nations.

The festival is as much a celebration of documentary films that depict the heartbeats of diverse ethnic groups, communities or groups of people, as it is a platform where filmmakers from around the world can meet, share and discuss ideas in a clear atmosphere and possibly make plans for future collaborations.

‘Meeting’ by Reza Majlesi and ‘Beloved’ by Yasser Talebi, all from Iran, were among the winners at the previous edition of the Armenian event.
